3. Annual Epidemiology Commentary FY 2018/19
Published 11th July 2019

The annual tables and commentaries were published on GOV.UK on the 11th July 2019. The annual tables provide annual counts and rates for trusts and CCGs for each of the organisms under the mandatory surveillance programme. The commentary provides a breakdown of rates by age and sex, by geography and by source of bacteraemia. For the first time, CDI prior trust exposure is also presented in this report. Rates of E. coli bacteraemia and MSSA bacteraemia continue to rise, this increase is mostly driven by community-onset cases. E. coli hospital-onset cases remain static whereas MSSA continue to rise. By contrast, the rates of MRSA bacteraemia and CDI remain low.
This is the second year that data for Klebsiella spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteraemias have been published. Rates are much lower for these two Gram-negative bacteraemias in comparison to E. coli. There has been a rise in cases of Klebsiella spp. and a decline in Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteraemia from 2017/18 to 2018/19.

Please note that this years annual tables have also been published in the long format, for the same reasons described for the national monthly statistics.
